This series ist als Nachfolgerin der Baureihen 150 und 151 der Deutschen Bundesbahn anzusehen. Sie entstand aus dem neuerlichen Bedarf für eine schwere Güterzuglokomotive mit weiter erhöhter Leistung und vor allem einer höheren Höchstgeschwindigkeit. Die DB bestellte 1994 bei der Siemens Verkehrstechnik 195 Maschinen auf Basis des Typs ES 64 F der Eurosprinter-Familie.
